As NCIS: Los Angeles gears up for its season 5 premiere, a lot of attention has been to the outcome of the finale's torture scene.

While it has been oft reported that Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen) will have difficulty dealing with the fallout of "Descent," very little attention has been given to how Sam (LL Cool J) will fare when the two agents are eventually rescued.

Luckily for fans of the former SEAL, series creator Shane Brennan recently let slip a few details regarding Sam's mindset in the premiere.

Who Will Leave the NCIS: LA Team In Season 5?

When viewers last saw Sam, he was being electrocuted at the hands of Siderov (Timothy V. Murphy) while trying to keep his wife's identity a secret. Meanwhile, Deeks was waiting in the wings to potentially spill his guts under duress, a course of action Sam was sure the LAPD detective would take.

"There has always been a certain amount of tension between Deeks and Sam," Brennan said, according to Xfinity. "Sam has often questioned Deeks' suitability for NCIS. Certainly, as a result of what they go through together, Sam will definitely reassess his opinion of Deeks."

Deeks and Kensi Will Experience a Split in NCIS: LA Season 5

Look for Sam and Deeks to have a "heartbreaking" scene in the season premiere, "Ascension."

Even if Michelle/Quinn (Aunjanue Ellis) does survive, a fate that Brennan says is mostly in the hands of Kensi (Daniela Ruah), Sam will still have to deal with the emotional effects of torture. When Nate (Peter Cambor), NCIS's operational psychologist, returns to the show, Sam will defiantly be spending some time as his patient.

Will There Be A Time Jump In NCIS: LA Season 5?

"Sam is a professional soldier. He's a SEAL. He has been trained. He has had much more training than Deeks has. He has been trained to resist torture and to understand the consequences of it. He is much more prepared for what happened, but even he has to face Nate," Brennan told Xfinity. "Callen (Chris O'Donnell) is there for him, in the way Kensi is for Deeks, but from Callen's point of view, he looks at Sam and says, 'Sam is a pro. Sam is going to be okay.'"
