A Breaking Bad spinoff is officially happening through AMC, according to Wednesday reports.

The Breaking Bad spinoff will be called Better Call Saul and feature Bob Odenkirk reprising his role as the eccentric lawyer Saul Goodman. Rumors had been swirling for months about a Saul Goodman spinoff, but The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Wednesday that the spinoff will be happening.

"As conceived, the new series is based on the show's popular Saul Goodman character with the working title Better Call Saul," Sony and AMC said in a joint statement. "Plans call for Saul to be a one-hour prequel that will focus on the evolution of the popular Saul Goodman character before he ever became Walter White's [(Bryan Cranston)] lawyer."

Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan will produce the spinoff series, as will Peter Gould, who created the character of Saul. Breaking Bad is in the midst of its final eight episodes, with Odenkirk's Saul being one of the series' main characters.

Saul was first introduced as a character in season 2 of the AMC series. The character became a fan favorite over the years for his eccentric personality and his ability to get his clients out of seemingly impossible situations.

Better Call Saul was optioned to several networks in addition to Netflix assuming AMC passed on the series. Gilligan has said that it was his "fervent wish" that the concept went forward as a series.

Better Call Saul does not have a scheduled premiere date yet, but with shows like Breaking Bad and Mad Men ending soon, the series will likely be premiering within a year or two.
