When Homeland premieres its third season in late September, Saul (Mandy Patinkin) will have a bigger role, according to a new report.

Claire Danes, who plays Carrie on the show, told Entertainment Weekly recently that Saul's role in the series will be much more significant when season 3 picks up.

"Saul has amazing stuff this season, and up until this point, he's only been presented as utterly sympathetic and kind, and we see a much more complex portrait of him here," Danes revealed. "That's great, because he's such a rich character."

Saul was one of the only survivors of the bombing at Langley, Va. in the season 2 finale. He and Carrie will be picking up the pieces in the season 3 premiere, giving testimonies on what happened that day.

Danes explained that the CIA would be in grave danger of being shut down in the first few episodes of the season.

"[Carrie], along with the other people in the CIA, is held on trial," Danes said. "The organization is under serious investigation and is on the verge of maybe ceasing to exist; very vulnerable to being shut down entirely. So she and Saul are having to defend it and keep it alive, which is very stressful. And [Saul and Carrie] aren't as simpatico as they have been in the past."

Homeland Season 3 Spoilers: Carrie Feels Responsible for Langley Bombing with Brody in Exile?

Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis), who was framed for the bombing at Langley, will be in exile at the start of season 3. This means Carrie will be separated from Brody, her on-again-off-again lover.

"In the beginning . . . they are physically separated. He's on the run and Carrie's been tracking his course but isn't entirely sure where he is at any given moment," Danes said.

Season 3 of Homeland is scheduled to premiere on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 9 p.m. on Showtime.
