It turns out The Mentalist's sixth season won't be all bad for Agents Rigsby (Owain Yeoman) and Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti).

Although the duo may be leaving by midseason, series creator Bruno Heller has hinted that the pair will at least move their relationship forward.

"As we get closer to Red John, all of the team members will start thinking about their major life decisions," Heller told Entertainment Weekly. "That applies to both Lisbon [Robin Tunney's character] and Grace. They haven't been able to look to their own feelings. As the show rolls on, those feelings will come to the fore."

According to Heller, Rigsby and Van Pelt will tie the knot before the CBI team wraps the Red John case around the New Year.

"I don't think I'm giving away too much to say that by the time [that story line ends], they are husband and wife," Heller told TV Guide. "[Episode 3] is the Rigsby-and-Van Pelt episode to watch. I don't know your views on marriage, but [it's] most people's happy ending."

However, this doesn't necessarily mean that the couple will have a happy exit from the show. While an insider told the National Enquirer that the two agents leave the CBI due to their engagement, the Red John case probably won't have an easy and clean ending. Any number of problems could cause the characters to be written out of the program.

The Mentalist returns to CBS on Sept. 29.
