The Canadian synthpop band Purity Ring released its remix of Lady Gaga's latest hit, Applause.

The song will be featured on Gaga's forthcoming Applause Remix EP, which debuts on Oct. 1.

Purity Ring's version breaks it up and slows down the pace of the song. The Montreal-based band sprinkle some alternative electro-pop dust on the song, which might make it more appealing to indie-music fans, who are essentially Purity Ring's audience too. Setting it in Purity Ring's signature mold, the single is suffused with atmospherics and beat samples which add sonic depth to the track. The band also introduces some grimy grooves before the refrain.

Daze Digital spoke with one half of Purity Ring, Corin Roddick, to speak about remixing the track. The duo worked on the song for about two weeks.

Roddick suggested there was plenty room for exploration and interpretation with the song.

"I listen to a lot of pop music in my spare time, and I just thought the chorus was just huge and had a powerful delivery and melody in it. I wanted to see if I could just craft something around that in a way that it would make sense to me," he said.

He also spoke about deconstructing the song, saying that the first thing he did was to delete everything on it, save the vocals. "With a remix I don't think any of the original instrumental should be used, so I just listened to vocals on repeat and took it back down to a blank canvas - just acapella, to imagine what could be around it," he said.

Applause has received mixed reviews from the media so far, even when she made the live debut of the song at the MTV VMAs the response wasn't very encouraging. On Sept. 18, Gaga went on Twitter to combat critics of the song and also to address her fans and explain what she intended to do with the song:

"'Applause' is a very meaningful song to me, because it addresses what many think of 'celebrities' today, that we 'do it' for the attention," the singer wrote. "But some of us are 'artists' in this group called 'celebrity,' & what we create doesn't live on unless there is an audience to remember it."

"So I may need your attention at first, so I can sing you my song. But its the 'Applause' after that let me know if I've entertained you," she posted.

"Entertainment makes people happy, I live for the 'Applause,' to know I've spread that. I live to hear you cheer, to just be a part of that," she added. "I believe in show business. The 'Applause' is what breeds that thing that I love. When I know i've made you happy. When I know it was good."

Applause is the first single to release off of Lady Gaga's forthcoming album, Artpop, which releases on Nov. 11.
