The long awaited release of Pokémon X and Y is just around the corner, but what should fans know before buying?

Set for release on Oct. 12, the two new videogames are the first iterations specifically made for the Nintendo 3DS and will debut simultaneous around the world at the same time as the new Nintendo 2DS.

The two games follow in a long tradition of duel releases from the franchise. While the X and Y are similar, they are not exactly the same. Taking place in the Kalos region, the type of Pokémon you encounter during your quest may differ, according to Forbes. Even if players are using a Pokémon found in bother versions, the creature may look slightly different, such as the mega-evolved Mewtwo which not only differ in appearance, but also feature different abilities.

Some new Pokémon and new evolutions will make their debuts in X and Y. Among these are Honedge (evolves to Doublade), Tyrunt (evolves to Tyantrum), Amaura (evolves to Aurorus), and Litleo (evolves to Pyroar).

To celebrate the release, those in the New York City area can head to Nintendo World for a midnight release and activities including a costume showcase, game-play kiosks, giveaways, and character appearances.
