The TODAY show lost one of its biggest fans on Sunday.

Linny Boyette, who has shown up at Rockefeller Plaza almost every morning, rain or shine, for TODAY for around 20 years, was pronounced dead after falling ill days prior.

"We are saddened to announce the death of TODAY superfan Linny Boyette, who has been a fixture on Rockefeller Plaza for nearly 20 years. We send our condolences to his family," NBC announced via Facebook on Sunday night.

On Sunday night, Meredith Vieira tweeted: "So saddened to hear of Linny's passing. I always loved seeing him every morning on the plaza. He had a wonderful smile and so sweet."

Willie Geist also tweeted Sunday night, calling him "an institution on the plaza. RIP, Linny."

Boyette was reportedly in his 70s. No further news has been released about his death.

On Thursday, the NBC morning show revealed that Boyette had fallen ill. At the time, Al Roker tweeted: "Our good friend Linny, always at our @TODAYshow window, is gravely ill. Thoughts and prayers go out to him and his famil."

Boyette was gone from the plaza during another heath scare earlier this year, and was later welcomed back by Roker, Savannah Guthrie and Matt Lauer.
