Celebrities in fashion, music, television and film stepped out wearing various costumes to pre-Halloween parties over the weekend.

The majority took their cues from popular culture, drawing inspiration from a variety of iconic movie characters, televison and music stars.

Miley Cyrus' outfit at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards was the most popular look of the weekend. Hugh Hefner's wife Crystal Harris, Paris Hilton and Fashion Police host Joan Rivers all wore two buns on their head, carried a foam finger and sported the bodysuit Cyrus wore during her controversial duet performance with Robin Thicke at the award show.

Snooki and her fiance' Jionni LaValle dressed as Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. Hours before, Snooki also hung out with her MTV co-star JWoww and they both dressed in matching costumes.

Other standouts included, Nicole Richie, who wore a men's suit, to dress like Danny DeVito. One of her tall friends also dressed in the same suit, as the two impersonated the characters from the hit '80s movie Twins.

ABCs Modern Family star Sarah Hyland and her boyfriend were Beauty and The Beast, Kance Bass was Garth from Wayne's World, David Spade was the Cowardly Lion from Wizard of Oz and Fergie was Elvira.

Fox's Glee actor Chad Overstreet reprised Charlie Hunnan's character from Sons of Anarchy.

Several music icons were also represented. Emmy-winning Dancing With The Stars champion Derek Hough dressed as Billy Idol while Rachel Zoe and her husband were the '70s music duo Sonny and Cher.

Cyrus' look, however, was not the most controversial look. Dancing With The Stars alum Julianne Hough garnered criticism when she wore "black face" makeup to impersonate the Black female character "Crazy Eyes" from Netflix' hit series Orange Is The New Black.

She was photographed Friday night with the dark makeup while wearing an orange prison suit and quickly received blacklash on Twitter:

The President of the Media Area Unit of NAACP of Pennsylvania considered it a disappointment and said Hough should be more responsible since she is a public figure.

"If her behavior is an act of impulsive insensitivity, she needs, as a public figure, to be more responsible," Joan Duvall-Flynn said in a statement to FOX News. "And, an apology for such insensitivity is appropriate."

Hough apologized on Twitter on Saturday, writing, "I am a huge fan of the show Orange is the New black, actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created. It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize."
