A new trailer for HBO's True Detective, which stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, was released on Monday.

The television anthology will comprise of eight episodes and tells the story of two detectives, Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Harrelson), who revisit a homicide case they had tried to solve in 1995. The mini-series follows a non-linear narrative, going back and forth in time as the duo attempt to crack the case in the present day and hunt for the serial killer in Louisiana.

In the trailer Cohle and Hart are seen battling the demons that have haunted them through their investigation of this twisted case over the course of 17 years.

"This feeling that life has slipped through your fingers," Harrelson's voice -- laden with a heavy Southern drawl -- plays to the scene of cops out in the fields with sniffer dogs.

"Someone once told me your life is just a nightmare you keep waking up into," McConaughey's character describes their plight in the trailer.

True Detective has been directed by Cary Fukunaga (Jane Eyre) and written by Nic Pizzolatto. The series also stars Kevin Dunn, Michelle Monaghan, Alexandra Daddario, Tory Kittles, Michael Potts, and Elizabeth Reaser.

McConaughey has also been busy promoting his upcoming film, the Dallas Buyers Club, which releases on Nov. 1. In the film, the actor plays Ron Woodroof, a Texas cowboy who contracts AIDS. While battling the death, Woodroof decides to help make experimental drugs available to AIDS patients.

The 43-year-old actor lost about 40 pounds to play the role. In a recent interview with Parade magazine, McConaughey spoke about the dramatic weight loss.

"Overall, I think it was an incredibly healthy thing I did for myself. It was a six-month fast and that's good I think mentally and spiritually. The human body is incredibly resilient," he said.

True Detective will premiere on HBO on Jan. 12 of 2014.
