Play Online - There are social challenges that result in heft cash rewards, according to Kotaku. From treasure hunting to wealthy ships ready for boarding, online mini quests can help gamers obtain upgrades quicker than those playing alone.

Boarding Ships - Gain both men and loot by fighting other vessels. Head to the southern seas for the more heavily laden ships and save plundered metal and supplies while you sell the big consumer goods of the age - rum and sugar, according to Digital Trends. If you raise your Wanted Level, more pirate hunters will come after you. This can be helpful since Kotaku reports that their ships are laden with the metal you need to repair and upgrade your own vessel.
