It can occasionally be difficult to get younger audiences interested in the world of musical theatre, leaving producers and writers scrambling for ideas on how to appeal to everyone. The effort often results in musicals based on popular movies and music.

Several musicals have graced the Broadway stages over the years that have used the music of popular bands and singers to help catapult original stories that are based around these songs. Some became such successes they spawned film adaptations as well.

In honor of the newest musical aspiring to the same Broadway dreams, SPEARS: The Gospel According to Britney, Enstars has compiled a list of five other musicals that have done the same thing:

Mamma Mia!: Based on the pop music of mega-group ABBA, the two act musical features some of the group's biggest hits, including Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen, S.O.S. and Our Last Summer. The story of a young girl searching for her father on the eve of her wedding has delighted international, national, and Broadway audiences since October 2001. A 2008 film adaptation starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgard, Colin Firth, Julie Walters, Chritine Baranski, Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper received mixed reviews, but the stage show is still running, with well over 5,000 performances to its name.

Jersey Boys: The hit Broadway Musical, which opened in November 2005 is based on the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, using the group's biggest hits to help propel the story, including Sherry, Walk Like A Man, and December 1963 (Oh, what a Night). The still-running success has produced several national tours and other stage residencies. The Broadway version won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and is reportedly in the works for a film adaptation as well.

Rock of Ages: Though the musical isn't based on one particular band, it uses the various hit songs of several 80s bands to tell its story of a rock club (similar to CBGB) that is under attack as the government tries to "clean up" the city. The show opened in 2009, and featured songs like Twisted Sister's I Wanna Rock, and We're Not Gonna Take It; Bon Jovi's Wanted Dead or Alive, Foreigner's I Want To Know What Love Is, Whitesnake's Here I Go Again, Pat Benatar's Hit Me With Your Best Shot, REO Speedwagon's Can't Fight This Feeling, and Journey's Don't Stop Believin' . A 2012 film adaptation starring Diego Boneta, Julianne Hough, Russell Brand, Alec Baldwin, Tom Cruise, Malin Akerman and Catherine Zeta-Jones failed to impress as much as the stage version of the show, which is still running on Broadway.

American Idiot: Based on the music of punk rock band Green Day, the one-act through-sung musical featured songs such as American Idiot, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, When it's Time, 21 Guns, Wake Me Up When September Ends, and Good Riddance (Time of Your Life). It follows the story of three friends, Johnny, Will and Tunny, as they navigate through their frustrations of suburban life, and media saturation inspiring them to do several different things like go to war, shoot up drugs, and drink. The show, which ran for 422 performances of Broadway from April 2010-April 2011, included a free digital download of the cast singing Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) at the end of each performance. It also won two Tony Awards: Best Scenic Design of a Musical and Best Lighting Design of a Musical, as well as a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album.

Baby It's You!: This short-lived musical, which only lasted on Broadway from April 2011-September 2011, told the story of Florence Greenberg and Scepter Records, featured songs by the 1960s pop group.
