The first full-length trailer for Divergent, the Neil Burger-directed film, was released Nov. 13 starring Shailene Woodley, Kate Winslet, Theo James and Ashley Judd.

The sci-fi action film is Summit Entertainment's next big young adult franchise. The film is based on Veronica Roth's novel of the same name and is the first in a trilogy.

Set in the future in Chicago, the story centers around Beatrice Prior (Woodley) and the challenges she faces to belong to a certain faction of this new-age society. The society is divided into five factions: Abnegation (the selfless), Amity (the peaceful), Candor (the honest), Dauntless (the brave) and Erudite (the intelligent).

Every year all 16-year-olds take an aptitude test that decides what faction makes for the best fit, after which they must decide whether to remain with their family or transfer to a new faction. Prior chooses to fight to belong with Dauntless. James portrays the character of Four, an instructor in the Dauntless community, and Miles Teller plays Peter, who is also being initiated into the same faction as Prior.

Winslet plays the antagonistic role as the leader of the Erudite's.

In the trailer Judd, who plays Prior's mother, asks her daughter if she is nervous to go for the test that would help her decide which faction she belongs to. Her mother goes on to tell her that she was terrified when she had to take the test.

Cut to Winslet's character addressing a hall full of 16-year-olds who are about to take the test.

"The only way our society can survive is for each of you to claim your rigthful place, today you will take a test that will help you discover who you truly are," she says. "The future belongs to those who know where they belong."

For the tests Prior is hooked up to a machine that transports her to a virtual realm where the tests are conducted to assess her mental strength and survival skills. However, it turns out that something is wrong with Prior's test results.

The test analyzer informs Prior that her results are inconclusive. Tthe test didn't work on her and she is then told that she is what they call a Divergent. The analyzer, who seems to want to protect Prios, tells her to hide her identity and never let the authorities find out that she is a Divergent.

The clip moves on to show Prior undergoing rigorous physical training in the Dauntless faction where she meets Four, a trainer in the camp who figures that she is a Divergent but forms a pact of trust with her. The two eventually end up being lovers.

Toward the end of the clip Winslet is heard warning Prior about Divergents: "[They] threaten the system, we won't be safe until they are removed."

The clip concludes with Prior telling James that they need to fight back.

The film is scheduled for release on March 21, 2014.

Roth's second novel in the series, Insurgent, released in May last year. The third and last novel of the trilogy, Allegiance, will hit shelves in October.
