Parks and Recreation's Chris Pratt is no stranger to putting on the pounds for a role, but the actor found it less enjoyable to have to slim down.

After bulking up to just under 300 pounds for a part in this month's Delivery Man, the 34-year-old actor had to shed the extra weight to prepare for his turn as Peter Quill, also known as the Star-Lord.

"After Delivery Man...I got cast in another movie called Guardians of the Galaxy, a Marvel movie, and then I had to lose a lot of weight because I was playing a hero, a heroic type guy so I lost 70 pounds," Pratt told Jay Leno on The Tonight Show on Nov. 13.

To make the transition, Pratt lamented he had to cut out "fun" or, more specifically, beer.

"I cut beer out, I didn't drink for about seven or eight months which really wasn't that difficult for me, I'm not like a huge alcoholic or anything," Pratt explained. "But I always prided my self on being in a pretty good mood and then I stopped drinking alcohol for eight months an I realized from time to time I got grumpy and I think that, you know, it's a nice social lubricant. If you don't have a problem as a drinker, I think it's a nice thing to be able to drink from time to time."

By time he arrived on the set of the James Gunn film, Pratt was not only lighter but he was also in shape, as is evidenced from the photo he posted when filming started last summer (see above).

Pratt can currently be seen in NBC's Parks and Recreation, which airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET. Delivery Man will enter theaters on Nov. 22 (trailer below) while Guardians of the Galaxy will debut on Aug. 1.
