Set to release alongside works from the Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America franchises, Guardians of the Galaxy appears to be the Marvel Phase Two outlier.

Devoid of the superheroes that make up the Avengers crew, the James Gunn film instead provides a new set of complex characters that tread the line between hero and villain.

Taking on the role of Gamora for the comic book inspired film, Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) explained that, although Gunn brings his unique brand of humor to the production, the characters will be undergoing deep internal changes throughout the movie.

"This is sort of like the antihero hero movie," Saldana said during last summer's San Diego Comic-Con, according to Movie Hole. "When you meet these characters, they're thieves, they're rebels, they're assassins, and they're going to be learning very big lessons."

Recent editions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe are known for plying continuously at the emotional nerve centers of their protagonists and it appears Guardians will continue that trend. Viewers can expect to leave the theater with a well-rounded understanding of the ensemble cast of characters.

"It's like, 'Does he cry? Does he feel?'" Saldana recently asked MTV in reference to typical superheroes. "Not only do we cover that, we're making heroes that are thieves! They're Robin Hood's and I love that because I like the underdog and the hardest route because that's the only one that's going to teach you great lessons in life. These characters are absolutely amazing and they have a full blown redemption."

Staring alongside Saldana are Chris Pratt, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Lee Pace, and Benicio Del Toro. Marvalites can watch criminals turn into heroes when Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters on Aug. 1.
