Google is working on launching a new project, currently in its experimentation stages, inspired by the upcoming film The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug.

The app, called Journey through Middle-earth, is still in its earlier stages of development and is not available on every configuration. Google is developing the product in collaboration with Warner Bros, New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It is being built only for Chrome users.

"You don't need to be besties with a Wizard to share an adventure in Middle-earth - just point your favourite browser to goo.gl/TheHobbit on your laptop, phone or tablet to check out Journey through Middle-Earth," Christos Apartoglou, Google's product marketing manager, posted on Google's official blog.

Below is the company's description og the project:

"Journey through Middle-earth brings the locations and characters from the movie trilogy to life with a mix of modern web technologies."

"Your adventure starts on a beautiful, interactive map of Middle-earth. Zoom in to explore Trollshaw Forest, Rivendell and Dol Guldur (with more locations to come in the next few weeks). Click on each one to learn its history and meet the characters who inhabit it, or dive further to test your wits on a unique survival challenge. "

In a teaser clip for the project, viewers are taken through exhilirating landscapes and locations featuring the Troll Shaw, Rivendell, Dol Guldup, Thranduil's Hall, Lake-Town and Erebor. The video invites fans to take an interactive journey and be part of the adventure and explore the unknown. As the camera moves along the serenity of the visuals viewers are disrupted by hulking monsters and dark demons, which users might have to combat.

Official details of the film's premiere were also revealed on Nov. 21. The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug will be premiere in Wellington, New Zealand on Dec. 9.

The film is scheduled to hit theaters on Dec. 13.
