Former governor Eliot Spitzer and estranged wife Silda are calling it quits, according to Christmas Eve reports.

Spitzer, who resigned from his New York governor's post in 2008 after his involvement in a high-end prostitution scandal and investigation, announced the end of his marriage on Tuesday night.

"We regret that our marital relationship has come to an end and we have agreed not to make any other public statement on this subject," read a statement from Spitzer's spokeswoman Lisa Linden, according to the New York Post.

While it remains unclear whether the couple is divorced or currently seeking a divorce, the pair have been living separately since May, according to Page Six. However, the official reason given for the separate living quarters was that Spitzer was caring for his elderly parents.

Now that Spitzer's failed run for New York City Comproller has ended, however, the politician recently set off the rumor mill when he was seen coming and going from the home of 31-year-old press secretary Lis Smith, according to the Daily Mail.

Smith, who currently works with New York City mayor-elect Bill de Blasio, has not released a statement regarding her alleged relationship with the 54-year-old Spitzer despite Page Six's report that the couple shared a candle-lit dinner together.
