Lorde and Haim are among the top new artists that ruled sales and music reviews by female acts in 2013.

Lorde's debut album, Pure Heroine, debuted at No. 1 on her home country's music charts, the The New Zealand Albums Chart, when it was released in September. It also debuted at No. 3 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chartThe album got rave review from the publication, as it stated, "September has been a profoundly great month for new female vocalists in popular music, but Lorde is easily the most vocally striking and lyrically thought-provoking. Pure Heroine is honest and addictive."

Rolling Stone gave the album 4 out of 5 stars, saying, "New artists in 2013 don't come any '2013'-ier than Lorde. Ella Yelich-O'Connor is 16, but she could be 25. She sings tough and raps soft. Pure Heroine feels surprisingly real and fully formed."

Lorde was also on Billboard's list of "Popular Artists - 2013" among industry veterans like Justin Timberlake, Eminem and Rihanna.

With Lorde hitting pop music fans' over the head with new aged pop, Haim came and nursed them back to health with a little rock. Haim's genre was described by Vogue as "nu-folk-meets-nineties-R&B-pop," and the three sisters have been likened to Fleetwood Mac.

Haim released their debut album, Days Are Gone, in August and it received an 8.4 score amongst fans on the popular review site, Metacritic. The A.V. Club said of the album, "It could be an overstatement to say that if Days Are Gone is any indication of what's to come for Haim, the band is set."

Haim's single, The Wire, has garnered 4 million hits on YouTube, while Lorde's Royals has had over 37 million.
