HBO's Boardwalk Empire is coming to an end as the network confirmed on Thursday that the upcoming fifth season will be its last.

"It has been an incredible honor to bring this powerful and groundbreaking series to our subscribers," Michael Lombardo, the programming president, said in a statement. "Terry Winter has created one for the ages."

Winter, who was also the executive producer of The Sopranos, spoke about the decision to end the show after five successful seasons.

"We're thrilled to get the go-ahead for a fifth season of Boardwalk Empire," Winter said. "After much discussion with my creative team and HBO, we've decided to wrap up the series after such a great run and look forward to bringing it to a powerful and exciting conclusion."

In 2013, the series received five Emmy Awards at the 65th Annual award ceremony. Bobby Cannavale, who played Gyp Rosetti, won the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. The rest of the awards included: Outstanding Art Direction for a Single-Camera Series, Outstanding Hairstyling for a Single-Camera Series, Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series and Outstanding Sound Editing for a Series.

The show, which stars Steve Buscemi as lead character Enoch "Nucky" Thompson, premiered in 2010.

"Getting the lead in a series, that's an amazing thing for me. But I don't feel like Nucky necessarily carries the show; I really feel like it's an ensemble, with a lot of important characters," Buscemi told The Star-Ledger of his epic role in 2013.

Season 5 of Boardwalk Empire will premiere in the fall.
