Greg Kinnear will be making his return to television on Rake, a new show on Fox premiering Thursday night.

In Rake, Kinnear plays Keegan Deane, a criminal defense lawyer who can't help but get into trouble in his personal life. Keegan has conflicts with his ex-wife, played by Miranda Otto, and various professionals like the judges, the assistant district attorney and the IRS.

The one-hour show is a comedy-drama hybrid that is set to air after American Idol on Thursday night. The show is based on the successful Australian series of the same name.

Kinnear said that he was attracted to playing the titular rake because of his personality.

"He's a really fun guy who doesn't have a governor, and he's impervious to failure and so unaffected by the damage," Kinnear explained to TV Guide this week. He's like one of those inflatable clowns we used to punch when I was a kid - no matter how hard you smash 'em, they bob right back up. I really admire that, because it's so not applicable to my own life. [Laughs] I'm not very good with rejection."

Filling out the Rake cast is John Ortiz as Ben, Keegan's best friend who he gets all of his cases from, Necar Zadegan as Scarlett, the assistant district attorney who also happens to be Ben's wife, and Tara Summers as Leanne, Keegan's assistant.

Rake premieres Thursday, Jan. 23 at 9 p.m. on Fox.
