Man of Steel 2 director Zack Snyder recently cleared a few things up about the highly anticipated blockbuster that features Superman and Batman together on the big screen for the first time.

Snyder spoke with French magazine Popcorn about Man of Steel 2, discussing the casting of Ben Affleck as Batman and revealing one of the influences for the film.

The popular comic The Dark Knight Returns will influence the film, according to Snyder, but the film will not be an adaptation of the comic.

"The comic book will influence the history of Batman vs. Superman, on which the writer David S. Goyer and myself will work," Snyder confirmed.

The Dark Knight Returns comic features an aged Batman coming out of retirement and facing off against Superman, his former ally.

As for the casting of Affleck as Batman, Snyder voiced his optimism.

"Ben brings an interesting counterweight to the performance of Henry [Cavill] in the role of Superman," he explained. "He has the experience necessary to paint the picture of an older and more advised man than Clark Kent, who bears the scars of a seasoned vigilante while retaining the charm that Bruce Wayne deploys when present in the world."
