Jolie, 38, and her fiance, 50, were in attendance to support 12 Years a Slave, which Pitt served as a producer.

The film, which portrays 19th century American slavery, snagged 10 nominations, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor and Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong'o. It won two.

The film's director, Steve McQueen, accepted the best film award and spoke about slavery that still exists today.

"There are 21 million people in slavery now as we sit here," he said. "I just hope that 150 years from now our ambivalence will not allow another film-maker to make this film."

Ejiofor, who beat Christian Bale, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks for the best actor award, thanked McQueen and his arduous work on the film.

"This is yours, I know that ... you know that," Ejiofor said in his acceptance speech. "I'm going to keep it, that's the kind of guy I am, but it's yours."
