On the upcoming second season of The Americans, Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich) is set to fall deeper in love with Nina (Annet Mahendru) as he isolates himself from his family.

Philip, Elizabeth & Kids Suffer "Horrific" Event in Premiere Episode?

Emmerich recently spoke with The Wall Street Journal about how Stan is feeling going into season 2 in terms of his various relationships.

"Stan is definitely struggling," Emmerich said. "He's having a hard time. He's isolated to a large degree from his immediate family - his wife and he are quite estranged as they were at the end of season 1 - and that continues to be a challenge for the family."

Emmerich then noted that Stan has become even more involved in his relationship with Nina, the mole who has turned into a double agent, a fact that Stan is unaware of.

Nina's portrayer Mahendru was promoted to series regular ahead of season 2, suggesting that the viewers will be seeing a lot of her and her complicated relationship with Stan.

His personal life will not compromise his job, however. The FBI agent will still be on the hunt for KGB spies living in America, though he still doesn't know that two are living next door in Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth (Keri Russell).

"He's evermore tenacious and resolved to pursue them and find them," Emmerich said, teasing the character's steely resolve going into the second season.

The Americans season 2 premieres Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 10 p.m. on FX.
