The New York Times obtained the first picture of Sinaloa's Cartel chief moments after his capture and posted it on it's website. The image reportedly was circulating among law enforcement officials, the newspaper noted. In the picture Guzman appears handcuffed, shirtless and with a few cuts to his head. It's the first image of Guzman after years of uncertainty about how he looked like since he escaped a high security Mexican jail in 2001.

Guzman, who was named Public Enemy No. 1 by the Chicago Crime Commission last year, also had a woman with him who was also arrested by Mexican maries and Drug Enforcement Administration authorities at a beach resort of Mazatlan. Apparently authorities in Mexico and the United States were working on nabbing the head of the operation for more than a month. He is said to be worth more than $1 billion.

Mexico's President Enrique Peña Nieto confirmed Guzman´s arrest via Twitter.

"I recognize the work of the Mexican security institutions to achieve the apprehension of Joaquín Guzmán Loera in Mazatlán," he said on his Twitter account.

Phil Jordan who lead the Al Paso Intelligence Center said it is imperative that officials continue to move quickly to make sure Guzman stays behind bars.

"It is a significant arrest provided he gets extradited immediately to the United States. If he does not get extradited, then he will be allowed to escape within a period of time. When you arrest the most powerful man in the Americas and in Mexico, if you talk to any cartel member they'll say that he's more powerful than Mexican President Pena Nieto.

This would be a significant blow to the overall operations not only in the America,s but Chapo Guzman has expanded to Europe. He was all over the place. If he is, in fact, incarcerated, until he gets extradited to the United States, it will be business as usual."

Jordan worked with the DEA for thirty years.

A senior administration official in Washington also said the arrest was a great victory for the government.

"This has been a long time coming, and hopefully puts a rest to the nonsense that this Mexican government isn't focusing on security and that the U.S. and Mexico aren't working well together. They are, and we do."

Guzman is wanted in the United States for several federal drug trafficking charges.

Guzman escaped from prison in 2001 hiding in a laundry basket just before his extradition to the United States. Since then, authorities embarked in a full force manhunt but Guzman eluded authorities for more than a decade.
