While many focus on the major arrest of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, the world's most powerful drug trafficker and Sinaloa's cartel chief was taken into custody with an unidentified woman that many speculate is his wife.

Chapo Guzman Arrested

Few details about the capture and Guzman's companion were available at the time of publication. However it has been widely reported in the past that Guzman is married to Emma Coronel, a 22-year-old former beauty queen.

Guzman and the mystery woman were taken into custody at a beach resort of Mazatlan early Saturday. Phil Jordan, the head of the Al Paso Intelligence Center stressed how significant the arrest is for the United States and Mexican governments.

"If he does not get extradited, then he will be allowed to escape within a period of time. When you arrest the most powerful man in the Americas and in Mexico, if you talk to any cartel member they'll say that he's more powerful than Mexican President Pena Nieto."

Guzman was also a well known drug dealer in Europe.

A senior administration official in Washington said the arrest "has been a long time coming."

Guzman and Coronel married in 2007 just days after she turned 18-years-old. She is Guzman's third or fourth wife and gave birth to two girl twins in 2011 in Los Angeles, Califiornia. Coronel, who is a citizen of the United States, delivered the twins at Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster.

She is listed as the mother on the children's birth certificates but the father's name is mysteriously blank. While her husband sat at the top of Public Enemy list last year, authorities could not legally arrest Coronel because at the time there were no charges against her.

She reportedly returned to Mexico after giving birth on Aug. 15, 2013, according to the LA Times.
