Theories that the titular mother character's death will be revealed in How I Met Your Mother's final episode were further ignited by the show's latest episode, Vesuvius.

Sandy Rivers To Appear In Final Episode?

The theory that the mother would die before 2030 has been rampant nearly since the series began airing beck in 2005, but as the March 31 series finale draws even closer, supposed evidence has been revealed to prove the theory is in fact correct.

On the March 3 episode, Vesuvius, Ted and the Mother are in the year 2024, and are spending a cold winter's night at the Farhampton Inn when Ted begins to tell the Mother the story of how on Barney and Robin's wedding day, Robin broke a lamp. The story escalates as Robin and Lilly fight over how Robin should be preparing for her big day (she's choosing to spend it watching The Wedding Bride Too on Pay-per-view), and Ted tries to help Barney find a suit to wear that night.

Marshall Not In Final Scenes?

The story ends when Robin's mother (Tracey Ullman), who initially wasn't supposed to show up at the wedding, arrives and hugs her daughter.

When the story flashes forward to 2024 again, the scene that many are reporting is the biggest tell-tale sign that the Mother will die occurs.

"Of course she showed up," the Mother said as Ted finished the story. "What mother is going to miss her daughter's wedding?"

At that moment, Ted's face begins to crumple, as does the Mother's, hinting that they are sad because of a similar situation.

Other things the Mother said in the episode, including telling Ted she didn't want him to only live in his stories of the past and to move forward in life, also seem to hint that the character will die somewhere between 2024 and 2030, the year where grown-up dead is telling his children the story of their mother.

Adding to the speculation, series co-creator Craig Thomas tweeted about the episode, calling it out as being important.

"Half hour till #HIMYM East Coast! "Vesuvius"-it's a big one!" he wrote before the episode aired.

Another hint making the rounds that seems to suggest the mother dies is a photo which surfaced of Neil Patrick Harris as he wrapped shooting on the finale episode last week. His character, Barney Stinson is seen wearing short shorts and a polo shirt, rather than his usual suits.

Though it could be a hint of some final bet yet to come that required him to give up his suits, it could also be a hint that the character was required to attend a funeral (potentially the mother's). Back in season 2, during the episode Monday Night Football, the character explained that he only wears suits on happy occasions, which funerals are not.

How I Met Your Mother airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on CBS.
