NCIS: Los Angeles' Deeks and Kensi seem to be battling a never-ending gamut of roadblocks in order to be together. Now that the latter is returning from Afghanistan, viewers are anxiously waiting to see if the two partners manage to forge a successful romantic relationship.

Is 'NCIS: LA's' White Ghost Really Kensi's Ex-Fiance Jack?

If you take Eric Christian Olsen's (Deeks) word for it, the future looks extremely rocky.

"But seriously, this is where the obstacles are so important. Just because something has happened doesn't mean that two characters can be together, especially when there are consequences for their actions. Especially when they're partners at work and they're putting themselves in danger," Olsen explained to TV Guide. "Because when you're driven by passion, you're not doing your job right. And that's where the storytelling gets really interesting. The journey after that moment is much more interesting than the journey before that moment."

Hetty Has Advice For Kensi On 'NCIS: LA', What Experience Will Linda Hunt's Character Share?

Deeks did suffer a moment of hesitation when Kensi (Daniela Ruah) was in danger during "The Frozen Lake," but he soon managed to separate his feelings from his job and was throwing knives dangerously close to his partner's head by time the episode came to a close. The question is whether or not he will always be able to contain his emotions in that manner.

However, Ruah says it was important for the CBS series not to follow the mold set by NCIS. While Tony (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva (Cote de Pablo) danced around each other for nine seasons, Deeks and Kensi took the plunge after only two.

"If you compare us to the other show, our characters have similar traits," Ruah told TV Guide. "And I think that since people already compare us by those traits, if you didn't differentiate where the relationship goes, it would just be a repetition of what's been done before. So the fact that we've shown something more than just the banter and flirtation between these two characters was actually quite crucial to our show."
