The first official trailer for the Annie remake has been released, and features plenty of singing, dancing and tender moments to create serious buzz about the project.

Cameron Diaz Shares Photos From Set of 'Annie' Remake

The modernized update to the classic story, which stars last year's Oscar breakout Quvenzhane Wallis as the famous orphan, is set to take place in modern-day New York City, where Annie is an orphan at a Harlem home run by the evil Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz, who puts an edgier spin on the traditionally evil character). To help his political campaign, billionaire Benjamin Stacks (Jamie Foxx) decides to take Annie out for public appearances, and eventually the orphan moves in with him as a part of the deal. Stacks begins to fall in love with the young orphan, but plans to officially adopt her are put on halt when her actual parents are potentially found.

Though several elements from the original tale are present, fans of the classic Broadway musical or John Huston's 1982 classic will be in for a shock as the movie gets a very modern makeover, featuring brighter, cleaner sets and costumes, a racially-flipped cast, and several current pop-culture references.

2014 Movies To Look Forward To

However, the updates do seem to help enhance the remake, which takes the story from the streets of the Great Depression, and potentially adds a delightful new twist on the tale that makes it more relevant with the economic circumstances surrounding a modern-day cast of characters.

The movie also stars Rose Byrne as Stacks' assistant, Grace, and Bobby Cannavale.

The movie opens in theaters Dec. 19, 2014. Watch the trailer below:
