Michael Keaton, who played Batman in 1989's Batman and 1992's Batman Returns, discussed Affleck in Man of Steel 2 and the ensuing criticism surrounding the casting decision.

"He's going to be great," Keaton told The Today Show. When asked about the criticism, he explained: "I don't follow it much, but I guess there was some sort of... I don't know why people get excited about things. Frankly, I don't understand it."

The decision to cast Affleck as Batman was met with criticism ever since the announcement in August 2013. The latest criticism came from actor Seth Green, who said that Affleck was not scary enough to play Batman.

"If this movie is meant to be the idealistic alien, humans-before-all-else Superman, and this is supposed to be the grizzled, weathered Batman who's been living in Gotham, fighting crime himself for 10 years, you need a guy who's older," Green explained in February. "You need a guy's who's got more weight, you need a guy that a Henry Cavill Superman is gonna be actually scared of."

In addition to Affleck's Batman and Cavill's Superman, Man of Steel 2 stars Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and Jeremy Irons as Alfred the butler.

Man of Steel 2 is scheduled for release in theaters on May 6, 2016.
