The first season of True Detective involved more than just two characters attempting to solve a murder case. It delved into the personal lives of both Detective Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Detective Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson), who although viewed the world in vastly different ways, eventually formed a bond.

Devoted to his work, Cohle lived a life of solitude and couldn't shake the pain he suffered from his daughter's death. Marty, on the other hand, drove his own wife and two daughters away because of his commitment to his job and other women.

Often, these two characters engaged in dark yet meaningful conversation, which made True Detective that much more intriguing.

Below are some of the best quotes from season 1 of the HBO series.
