Cardinal Timothy Dolan, a highly ranked Catholic leader in New York, has given his support to Michael Sam, the University of Missouri football player who revealed he was gay to the world just last month.

In an interview with NBC's Meet the Press on Sunday, Dolan openly supported Sam's decision despite any religious practices that may object it.

"Good for him," Dolan said.

"I would have no sense of judgment on him," he continued. "God bless ya. I don't think, look, the same Bible that tells us, that teaches us well about the virtues of chastity and the virtue of fidelity and marriage also tells us not to judge people. So I would say, 'Bravo.'"

Sam revealed he was gay in an interview with ESPN in February.

"I am an openly, proud gay man," Sam said. "I understand how big this is. It's a big deal. No one has done this before. And it's kind of a nervous process, but I know what I want to be...I want to be a football player in the NFL."

Sam also went on to elaborate that others seemed aware of his sexual orientation, but he still wanted to officially come clean nonetheless.

"I didn't realize how many people actually knew, and I was afraid that someone would tell or leak something about me," he said. "I want to own my truth...no one else should tell my story but me."
