The new trailer for Maleficent features dragons and tree monsters and captures the evil sorceress' compassionate side.

Angelina Jolie Inspired By Lady Gaga Makeup for Maleficent?

This is probably the longest trailer of the Disney film released so far, featuring more conversation and building some context. The clip takes us to the beginning, the portentuous presence of Maleficent at the birth of the king's daughter Aurora.

The film is essentially a revisionist take on Sleeping Beauty, told from the perspective of the antagonist, Maleficent. Angelina Jolie plays the female villain who casts a curse on the king's daughter Aurora, who is portrayed by Elle Fanning. In this take on the fairytale, some empathy is shown toward Maleficent as she is put forth as a complex character who had reason to seek vengeance and was not always evil.

In the trailer Maleficent recalls when things turned awry causing her to be vengeful. As Maleficent wages war on the King and forces clash, her army consists of all "who live in the shadows" -- gnarly tree monsters and dragons. While Aurora seems to have befriended her at first she soon finds out that the sorceress had cast a spell on her that would put Aurora into a death-like sleep on her 16th birthday. Toward the end of the video, Maleficent swoops down, with massive scaled wings like that of a raven, to confront Aurora.

Jolie recently featured on the cover of Entertainment Weekly. In her interview -- which spanned various subjects from the film to her recent masectomy -- the 38-year-old actress suggested that people universally seemed to agree that she would be perfect for playing the part of the Maleficent.

"It is really funny when people say you'd be obvious for a great villain," she said.

The film will hit theaters on May 30.
