True Detective season 2 is reportedly centered on the "secret occult history" of America's transportation system, and it's possible that the HBO series could cover the iconic Route 66.

True Detective Season 2: Brad Pitt Set To Star?

With little to no information about True Detective season 2 announced, many publications have taken what little there is out there and speculated about what the season could feature. One of the more plausible theories is the idea of Route 66, as noted by Grantland in a recent report.

In addition to the "secret occult history" tease, True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto has teased a certain importance in past 40 years of Southern California government. As Route 66 has long been an iconic symbol of Los Angeles, the show could take something from the darkness associated with it as the main conflict.

New Episodes Feature "All Kinds Of Conspiracies" in Southern California?

Route 66 has been alluded to and referenced in such works as The Eagles' song Hotel California, as discussed by the band's former guitarist Don Felder.

"Everybody had driven into Los Angeles on what used to be Route 66," Felder said in 2012. "And as you drive in through the desert at night, you can see the glow of Los Angeles from a hundred miles away. The closer and closer you get, you start seeing all of these images, and these things pounded into our heads: the stars on Hollywood Boulevard, movie stars, palm trees, beaches and girls in bikinis."

The Grantland report notes that there is interesting typography for Route 66, as adding another "six" makes it much more sinister. Additionally, the imagery on the route is cinematic and distinctive, which the first season of True Detective used to its advantage in season 1.

True Detective has not yet been renewed for season 2 but it will likely return on HBO in 2015.
