American Idol's top eight contestants are on the chopping block once more, and the hopeful performers spent Wednesday night trying to convince the nation that they should be allowed to advance to the next round.

Under the watchful gaze of Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban, and Harry Connick Jr., the remaining season 13 competitors took turns singing their old audition pieces an partnering up for duets to complete the night's theme - "Back to the Start."

First up was Jessica Meuse, and the 23-year-old performer kicked off the night with an original composition. Titled Blue-Eyed Lie, the song garnered her extra credit in the creativity department and elicited a Cher reference from Connick (see video below).

Alex Preston also received compliments from the judges when he reprised his original song, Fairytales. Originally slightly awkward seeming, Preston has continually managed to win fans throughout the season.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Idol competitors had a good night as well. CJ Harris, Sam Woolf, Malaya Watson, Dexter Roberts, Jena Irene, and Caleb Johnson all received complements from the judges on their advancements in everything from stage presence to vocals.
