The critically acclaimed eight-episode HBO series, True Detective, was so well received that it is rumored to be returning for a second season in 2015, though sans its original stars like Matthew McConaughey and perhaps even Woody Harrelson. So what's all the buzz about its Emmy submission being unfair?

Reportedly, True Detective was HBO's biggest show debut since 2010, with its premiere garnering about 2.3 million viewers in January earlier this year. Wednesday, Entertainment Weekly reported that FX Network president John Landgraf accused a few networks, including HBO, of engaging in "unfair" Emmy submission practices.

According to the reports, Landgraf is finding the entry unfair because True Detective is a show that featured prominent movie stars, like McConaughey and Harrelson, which other shows in the Best Drama Series category don't typically have. "To tell you the truth, I think it's actually unfair for HBO to put True Detective in the drama series category because essentially you can get certain actors to do a closed-ended series - a la Billy Bob Thornton in Fargo or Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in True Detective - who you can't get to sign on for a seven-year [regular drama series] deal," stated the FX president.

Moreover, Landgraf accused HBO and others as having stretched the definitions of popular categories in an effort to win big. The last time HBO won in the Best Drama Series category was back in 2007 for the Italian mobster show, The Sopranos, and the company is hoping to rack up in awards this Emmy season. Plus, the show's creator Nic Pizzolatto hinted at about season two, stating "There could be a season that's much more of a widespread conspiracy thriller, a season that's a small town murder mystery, a season where nobody is murdered and it's a master criminal versus a rogue detective or something."
