Walking down the red carpet is not exactly the same as walking down the aisle but it's a start.

Eight months ago, A-list actors Catherine Zeta-Jones, 44, and Michael Douglas, 69, separated after 13 years of marriage to "evaluate and work on their marriage," according to E! Online Wednesday. They are trying to make it work.

Michael Douglas Tells Jay Leno "This Isn't the End"

They joined each other for a rare public siting at The Library's opening night at The Public Theatre in New York City. Even though they went to the shindig in support of director Steven Soderbergh, it marks the first time they've attend an official event together since separation. This could mean good news. Zeta-Jones worked with Soderbergh on Traffic, Ocean's Twelve and Side Effects, while Douglas worked with him on Traffic, Haywire and Behind the Candelabra.

Douglas has always remained hopeful through the trials and storms. He sat down with Jay Leno on The Tonight Show on Oct. 21 and said, "Sometimes people take a little bit of a break, but it doesn't necessarily mean that's the end... I'm very hopeful."

Catherine Zeta-Jones Battles Bi-Polar Disorder

With the advent of the Hollywood microwave marriage, it's refreshing to see this couple is striving for the long haul - especially for their children, Dylan, 13, and Carys, 10. Dylan desires to follow in his famous father's acting footsteps, continuing the acting tradition started by Douglas' own father, Kirk Douglas.

Michael told Leno on the show, "Dylan doesn't see any reason to do anything else because he wants to act... He was at me the other day and he said, 'Dad, you saw me in Oliver. I played the Artful Dodger.'...He says, 'Dad, how about throwing me a bone?' I said, 'Sure, okay. We'll work on it.'"

The couple has had to fight against both Michael's cancer and Zeta-Jones' depression and bi-polar disorder. Michael's mother, Diana Douglas, 91, a successful former actress, revealed in Wales Online on March 2 that the couple went on a series of holidays to rebuild their romance and reconcile.

"They are together. I knew they would work it out. They're both gentle people, not hysterical. They're always very affectionate and easy with each other."

The power couple was first introduced by Danny DeVito at a dinner party in France. Michael's opening line to Zeta-Jones was "I'd like to father your children", recalled Diana. "That was quite an introduction. He must have been absolutely swept away by her," she said.
