Joel and Julia struggled immensely with their marriage during season 5 of Parenthood, and more will unfold for the couple on the finale, according to the show's executive producer.

Sydney Has A Breakdown Over Joel and Julia's Separation?

"I love the finale," Jason Katims told the Today Show. "I'm really proud of it. This year, there's been a lot of change for our characters and a lot of (that) comes to a head. It has a combination of real catharsis - something in the Joel and Julia story that will give people something to hope for, and other stories as well. ... (The finale) definitely has its poignant moments but I think it's really hopeful."

Julia Gets Blamed For Her Situation With Joel

The couple's marriage went downhill after Julia confessed to kissing Ed. Julia attempted to salvage her relationship but Joel seemed reluctant. In a recent episode, he even told his estranged wife that their relationship wasn't working even before she engaged in the kiss. With tears in his eyes, the father of their two children explained that he felt hurt by her displeasure of being a stay-at-home mom and revealed that he considered her kiss cheating.

Peter Krause, who plays Adam Braverman, also revealed that the finale will be a tearjerker.

"People talk about the show making them cry," he said. "I think the last episode will definitely make some people cry. If you don't want to say goodbye to the house, don't watch."

The Parenthood season 5 finale airs on Thursday, April 17 at 10 p.m. EST on NBC.
