HBO's neo-noir crime anthology, True Detective, garnered widespread critical acclaim for its first season. In fact, before season 1 of the show even ended, fans were already raving in anticipation of a season 2. Given the popularity of the show, why is HBO waiting to renew it?

'True Detective' Series Creator Interview, 'I'm Writing Season 2 Right Now?'

Written and executive produced by Louisiana native, Nic Pizzolatto, the mysterious HBO series is "about two Louisiana State Police detectives and their seventeen-year hunt for a killer." But, that's just on the surface. Once the viewer actually delves into the program, it is realized that the southern gothic drama actually deals with a seemingly hopeless world devoid of God. Matthew McConaughey's character, the "pessimist grump Rust Cohle" is depicted as an atheist, while Woody Harrelson portrayed the "dim Everyman Marty Hart."

Moreover, the show is riddled with satanic undertones and an overall eeriness. Some may wonder how an individual could imagine such a seemingly dismal existence. In a February interview with Entertainment Weekly (EW), Pizzolatto touched on his inspirations for True Detective. When asked which particular "cultural obsessions and influences" of his are represented in season 1, he said, "Whatever I watched, whatever I loved in 36 years of life on Earth, probably had some influence on me."

'True Detective' Creator Says 'Casting Is Its Own Issue?'

Likewise, he gave examples including other HBO hit series like The Sopranos, The Wire, and Deadwood, to "Hieronymous Bosch's portraits of hell and a monstrous, fallen world." With that said, which type of changes can the audience expect to see next season? Firstly, HBO has yet to order a second season of True Detective. He told EW, "They want to do season 2. I just have to give them scripts and see if they like them!" However, if the show does go on as expected, another director is likely to be brought on and lend a hand to Cary Jo Fukunaga. Plus, there is talk of Brad Pitt starring along with a female lead as the main characters. One thing Pizzolatto did guarantee is that he will "keep being strange."
