In an interview with the Mirror date April 19, Freeman said that he found out that the prince was quite smitten by the Peter Jackson adaptations when he met him at the premiere of the first, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, in London.

Freeman called him the "biggest royal fan" of the series. The actor went on to add that the prince made it to the premiere despite the fact that Kate was in hospital because of acute morning sickness two months into her pregnancy.

"William wanted to be there at premiere as Kate was in hospital at the time so he obviously wanted to be there," he said.

Freeman also suggested that the two of them geeked-out about Middle Earth but then he thought he maybe started to bore the prince a bit.

"He knew all the facts about Middle Earth and I think I kept him talking too long," he said.  "You know the protocol, you have got to let them say what they want to say and let them move on but I think I was boring him a little bit as I held onto him talking about Middle Earth."
