The Internet has become abuzz with rumors of Tom Hiddleston's potential casting in Sherlock season 4.

Benedict Cumberbatch "Doesn't Know" If Sherlock Is Returning?

Hiddleston, who has become a fan favorite as Loki in the Thor movies and The Avengers, was speculated to be playing the third Holmes brother on Sherlock. The season 3 finale feature Mycroft Holmes (Mark Gatiss) mentioning a potential third Holmes brother, sending the Internet into a frenzy of speculation.

Gatiss, who is also the co-creator of Sherlock, spoke about the rumors of Hiddleston's casting at a Q&A session in Brazil recently.

Sherlock Holmes To Grow More 'Human' in Sherlock Season 4?

"Tom would be wonderful in Sherlock," Gatiss admitted. "But he only does movies now. What can I say? . . . Well it's an internet rumor so it must be true. We might as well just wait and see what happens."

Giving fans a little glimmer of hope, Gatiss added, "I'll ask him if you like."

While Hiddleston's casting would undoubtedly be a popular one, it's possible that the third Holmes brother isn't even alive, as Zap2It suggests. Mycroft said in the finale, "You know what happened to the other one," suggesting that the brother may have received his fate.

As Gatiss noted, Hiddleston is indeed busy doing movies. The actor is hard at work filming Crimson Peak, a film in which he stars as Sir Thomas Sharpe, a mysterious man with a past. The film co-stars Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Charlie Hunnam and Jim Beaver.

As of now, Sherlock season 4 does not have a set premiere date, though it is estimated to hit television screens in 2016.
