Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is filing for divorce from his wife of two years, Ashton Meem.

The announcement comes after three months the NFL player led him team to a Super Bowl victory.

In an release from his team, Wilson asked for prayers and privacy.

"I have made the difficult decision to file for divorce," Wilson said in the statement. "Clearly, decisions like these don't come easy. Ashton and I respectfully ask for prayers, understanding and privacy during this difficult time. Moving forward, I will have no further comment on this personal matter."

Wilson and Meem wed in January 2012, a few months he was drafted by the Seahawks. They met while both attending the same high school in Virginia. Meem later moved to North Carolina to join Wilson at North Carolina State, where he started his college career before finishing at Wisconsin.

The 25-year-old was drafted in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Wilson has led the team to a 28 regular-season and playoff wins, including a 43-8 win over the Denver Broncos during the Super Bowl in February.

The divorce is a shock for many, as the couple were collectively involved in many charities. They were last photographed together heading to The David Letterman Show the day after the Super Bowl.
