Television viewers who are afraid of clowns might want to stay away from the upcoming fourth season of American Horror Story.

Taissa Farmiga Denies Possible Role In American Horror Story: Freak Show?

American Horror Story season 4 is subtitled Freak Show and there will be a cavalcade of freaks running around. Series co-creator Ryan Murphy spoke with Entertainment Weekly this week about season 4 and how it might be the darkest season since Asylum.

"It was always a concept that Jessica and I talked about really early on," Murphy said, referring to the Freak Show premise. "It was always her favorite one, which I thought was funny. I've had many different versions that I've run by her. I just love it. It feels really right."

Emma Roberts Reuniting With Fiance Evan Peters For Season 4?

Freak Show is set in the year 1950 and features Lange as the owner of a troupe of freaks. Murphy previously said that the season would be more fun, like Coven, though he is now discovering that it might have more in common with the season before.

"I thought it was going to be light but it's turning out to be quite terrifyingly dark, which it feels much more like the Asylum season," he said, at which point he dropped a bombshell on a big plot point: "But look - if you have a character named the Clown Killer, it's going to be dark."

When asked if that meant that there would be a scary clown running around, Murphy confirmed.

"Yes," he said. "The most terrifying clown ever!" When he was also asked if there would be one of the more famous freaks, the Bearded Lady, he said, "Yes. Our version of it."

It looks like this season might have a genuinely horrifying horror story.

American Horror Story: Freak Show premiere in the fall on FX, though the network has not yet announced a premiere date.
