Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss has revealed the latest updates on the yet-to-be-filmed Season 4 of the popular British series, dismissing one big rumor in the process.

Tom Hiddleston Ready To Sign On As Third Holmes Brother In Season 4?

Gatiss revealed at the Arqiva BAFTA Television Awards 2014 last week that despite rumors that there would be a one-off special for Sherlock rather than a Season 4, this was not true.

He said that a fourth season was "the plan," explicitly saying, "There was talk [of a single film, but] amongst people who have nothing to do with Sherlock, I'm afraid."

'Increasingly Difficult' To Get Sherlock Cast Together, Season 4 Production Delayed?

Those behind Sherlock have not been shy about revealing how difficult it is to get everyone together to film a season. Considering Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the titular character, and Martin Freeman, who plays Watson, are bonafide movie stars at this point, their schedules are more crowded than ever before.

Sherlock's other creator Steven Moffat also has a busy schedule, according to Gatiss.

"Benedict and Martin's schedules, Steven's schedule, my schedule, everybody's schedule - it's like a jigsaw puzzle," he said. "But both [Martin and Benedict] are really very keen to carry on and as I say, we have made progress."

Assuming Sherlock goes on the same schedule as the previous three seasons, fans should expect the show to return to television in 2016. The series premiered in 2010, aired its second season in 2012 and aired its most recent third season in January 2014.

Based on Gatiss' comments about having "made progress," it's always possible that it could return in 2015, though nothing has been confirmed.
