Filmmaker Kevin Smith has offered his take on the upcoming blockbuster Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, explaining that the film should not be thought of as a sequel to Man of Steel.

Ben Affleck Batsuit Actually Blue & Gray Rather Than All-Black?

Smith, who was privy to the Batsuit for Batman v Superman long before the general public, discussed the movie on his Hollywood Babble-On podcast, saying that the upcoming movie will be the start of a new series rather than a sequel to the 2013 Superman film.

"This is the beginning of the Justice League, as we all suspected as they were announcing that cast," Smith explained. "We were like, 'This is the beginning of a Justice League movie.' From what I understand now, it's no longer like, 'This is Superman 2.' They're not doing these things. They're doing like, 'Here's Man of Steel. Here's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.'"

He added that Batman v Superman is essentially the start of building the D.C. universe.

"They're just going to keep building their universe for about five or six movies....But all of them...it's supposed to tell one massive story, which is all Justice League oriented," he said.

The Justice League movie is coming in 2018, where presumably all of the major D.C. heroes will come together in a similar way of Marvel's The Avengers.

Presuming they go with the original Justice League team, it will be comprised of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman and the Martian Manhunter. Assuming they have signed multi-film deals, it is probable that Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot will be reprising their roles as Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, respectively.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is scheduled for release in theaters on May 6, 2016.
