Fifty Shades of Grey has an Anastasia Steele in newcomer Dakota Johnson, but could a Pretty Little Liar have almost been cast in the coveted role?

Lucy Hale just revealed that she auditioned for the role to Us Weekly. Hale is known for her role as the edgy Aria on the hit ABC Family Pretty Little Liars. Although Hale isn't known for showing her skin, on the show her character is in love with an older teacher, so maybe Christian Grey isn't such a leap.

Hale probably has no regrets on not getting the role, however, since her singing career is booming. The 24-year-old just released her first country album titled Road Between. Hale's debut shot right up to number two on the iTunes charts, right behind heavy hitter Miranda Lambert.

"A lot of people who know me from the show would probably have thought I'd go in a different direction," Hale told The New York Daily News. "But I grew up on country music. It's my first love."

Hale won the show American Juniors as a young teen before acting in such shows as Wizards of Waverly Place and then PLL.

Hale admitted that country music and her album has become more mainstream because of such artists as Taylor Swift.

"That's good, because it's opened up a lot of people to it," Hale said about country going pop. "If you didn't grow up in an area where country is dominant, you can have a clichéd view of what it is. So some people, when they hear it now, are surprised."

Hale's album is out now, while Pretty Little Liars comes back on June 10. Fifty Shades of Grey (without Hale) is set to come out on Valentine's Day 2015.
