It looks as though Michael Douglas might be taking the blame for his marital troubles with Hollywood actress Catherine Zeta-Jones. The couple, who announced their split late last year, have since reconciled with Douglas apparently admitting that he made "mistakes" in their marriage.

In a new interview with Britain's The Sun, Douglas says that he has made the mistake of taking people closest to him "for granted."

Douglas notes: "First you have to admit that you made a mistake, then dealing with it is easy. Of course it's important to make mistakes as long as you grow from them."

Douglas also reveals that he has changed his attitude towards his relationship with his wife and that his throat cancer has forced him to look at his life in a different way.

"When you are younger you care what other people think. You waste a lot of energy on strangers to make a good impression. When you're older you focus that energy on the people closest to you, on your family," he says.

Douglas also admits that the couple have been seeking marital counseling in order to help patch up their marriage.

"We did get some marriage counseling," Douglas says. "I think if both parties want to work it out, it makes it a lot easier than if one party is out the door. Things are going great with Catherine and me. The children are doing well both in school and as human beings. I don't know many people my age who have an 11-year-old and a 13-year-old - that certainly keeps you going."

The couple have been married since 2000 and have two children, Dylan, 13, and Carys, 11.
