The dark past of the calculating Jillian Darmody (Gretchen Mol) finally caught up with her at the end of Boardwalk Empire's fourth season.

Boardwalk Empire Season 5 Spoilers

The mother of the murdered Jimmy Darmody (Michael Pitt) and grandmother to young Tommy confided in her boyfriend (Ron Livingston) that she had killed a man, but the secret didn't last long. That boyfriend turned out to be an undercover detective, and Jillian was promptly arrested for her crime.

Now that the HBO prohibition series is moving into its fifth and final season this fall, will Gretchen Mol be reprising her role as the tormented and occasionally cruel Jillian Darmody?

Boardwalk Empire Adds New Character To Final Season

A interview with Gold Derby back in May suggests that the actress isn't quite off the show just yet. Her character is after all, still alive, which is something even Mol admitted to being surprised at.

"It's sad... It's really been a dream..." said Mol, "But I also think it's good to let things go when they are still going strong." The fact that Mol spoke this way of Boardwalk Empire's final season and not Season 4 implies that it's possible her character will still appear when the show returns in the fall.

As for fans rooting for Jillian, Mol knows it is not always an easy task. "She was essentially an orphan..." Mold explained, garnering sympathy for her character's plight, "All she knew from a very young age was being sexualized and having no real reference for what love is... in some ways she's stunted."

Boardwalk Empire is never short of complicated characters, and season five is sure to be no different.
