With the jump from the 1920s into the Great Depression during the 1930s for Boardwalk Empire's final season, some new sets were required to create a weathered, forsaken Atlantic City.

Boardwalk Empire Movies Into Great Depression For Final Season

This week the HBO prohibition drama will be filming in Far Rockaway. Recent photos from the set show a desolate "The Corner Hotel" which looks more like the Bates property in Psycho than something one would see on this show's classy boardwalk.

Photos also show a grocery, which appears to have seen quite a fair share of abuse. These images are of course in keeping with historical accuracy as the program takes on the Great Depression.

While the sets surely reflect dark times, the NY Daily News reported on Wednesday that locals are excited for filming. Production will be good for local business in Far Rockaway, and filmmakers make an active effort to respect the surrounding community.

"I think people in the community are excited," announced Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder on June 18, "Not only are the filming a television show in Rockaway, they are being a good partner and using local business when they can."

Producer Martin Scorsese, who also directed the pilot, had originally intended to shoot Boardwalk Empire in Asbury Park, NJ. However, the filmmaker decided to opt for New York after difficulty negotiating terms with the state.
