Hannibal's Beverly Katz snooping in Dr. Lecter's basement resulted in her untimely demise, but what exactly did the crime scene investigator see that was so compromising?

Why Is Bedelia Fleeing With Dr Lecter? Bryan Fuller Explains The Psychiatrists' Golden Opportunity On 'Hannibal'

Although there is no way viewers could have put the pieces together until the season 3 finale, it turns out that Katz may have stumbled upon the allegedly dead Abigail Hobbs (Hettienne Park) cooped up in the good doctor's cellar.

"Did she see this poor girl down in the basement, and was like, oh my God, he's been holding her captive like an animal this entire time, and she turns around in a rage of 'you monster!'?" asked series creator Bryan Fuller while speaking with the A.V. Club. "That was something we had talked about. What exactly did Beverly see? In my mind it was always Abigail Hobbs down there in some way, caught with her hand in the candy jar. That felt like it was the genuine surprise."

If it was Hobbs in the basement, fans are faced with yet another question - did the earless daughter of a killer take a page from her father's book and help off Katz?

"We didn't know, because we cut away, and we see the bullet go through the ceiling of the basement into the dining room, we didn't necessarily know: Was that a dogpile on Beverly Katz with both Abigail and Hannibal?" Fuller explained to A.V. Club. "Although, I don't think Abigail would have attacked Beverly in that moment. I think she was very reluctant to attack Alana, which is why she was so confused and upset when Will finally sees her, because she's like, 'This is not the plan that we had discussed.'"

Unfortunately, Hobbs may soon join Katz in the afterlife. Find out more when Hannibal returns to NBC in 2015.
