Sherlock fans eagerly anticipating more of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman may get their wish in the form of a Christmas Special.

Molly Kissing Sherlock In The Empty Hearse Was "Completely Crackers," Says Actress

Freeman, who plays John Watson on the series, spoke with the Telegraph recently and revealed that a Christmas Special might be in the works soon. He said that while filming in early 2015 seems likely, it would have a good chance of being a holiday special and not necessarily a new season.

"If that's going to be a special - I'm speaking off-message here; if this was New Labour I'd get fired -- I think that might be for next Christmas. A Christmas special. That's what I understand," he said.

Sherlock Could Be On For "A Very Long Time," Says Steven Moffat

This means that Sherlock fans might not be receiving any new content until December 2015, which would actually be a little bit early than what had previously been assumed, which was the release of Season 4 in early 2016.

Freeman was also asked if real-life wife Amanda Abbington, who plays Mary on the series, would be returning for future installments of Sherlock, and he is nearly positive that she will.

"Certainly, yes, for the foreseeable future," before revealing a bit of spoiler for those who haven't read Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock stories.

"While we play fast and loose with the original stories, we generally follow the trajectory of what Conan Doyle did. So he [Watson] gets married, and then Mary dies - so at some point presumably she'll die," Freeman said.

It is currently unknown if Sherlock is indeed returning for a fourth season, though executive producer Steven Moffat has essentially confirmed that there will be.

All three seasons of Sherlock are currently available for streaming on Netflix and are also available on DVD and Blu-Ray.
