Glee star Chris Colfer, who plays fan favorite Kurt on the musical series, has reportedly been let go and will not be appearing in the sixth and final season.

Colfer shocked his Twitter followers when he tweeted a disappointing message Thursday:

"Due to personal issues, I have been let go from the cast of GLEE. Explanations will come shortly..." he tweeted.

UPDATE: 20th Century Fox quickly issued a statement after the story spread refuting the news:

"We've been alerted that Chris Colfer's Twitter account has been hacked. Rumors of his dismissal from Glee could not be further from the truth. We love Chris and look forward to working with him again this season."

Colfer has been a mainstay on Glee since the show's very first season in 2009. While not the star originally, he quickly became a fan favorite for his colorful and multilayered performance as Kurt Hummel, and his screen time gradually increased. He has become one of the show's main leads, with the show following him to New York.

Colfer's performance actually earned him two Emmy nominations for the show's first and second seasons, respectively. He also won the 2010 Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries of Movie Made for Television. He has also won other honors such as the Teen Choice Award, the People's Choice Award and the Satellite Award.

Glee Season 6 is expected to air in early 2015, though Fox has not made an official announcement on when it will return.
